Preheat the oven to 350℉.
In a cast-iron skillet (or oven-proof high-sided pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the onion and cook until translucent, 2-3 minutes.
Push the onions to the outer edges of the pan and add the ground beef in the middle.
Let the beef cook without stirring, until golden brown on bottom, about 1-2 minutes and then add 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp cumin and 1 tsp chili powder and then break up into chunks. Continue to cook and crumble the ground beef until browned, incorporating onions as you cook through the ground beef, about 5 more minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium, add the beans, tomato sauce, water, chili powder, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder and salt and stir to combine.
